How to get a lot of followers on Twitter

How to get a lot of followers on Twitter

Twitter is one of the most powerful social media alongside with Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Plus. Today, I don’t see many bloggers and internet marketers are without a Twitter account.

It seems to me like having a Twitter account is a must, just like Facebook Page, Google Plus Page, LinkedIn and so on. So, if you still do not have a Twitter account, get yourself one here.

There are a lot of benefits of having a powerful Twitter account but that is not what we are going to talk about now. I’d like to emphasize more on how to get a lot of followers on Twitter instead.

Having more followers means more eyeballs seeing what you tweet.

As a result, it is extremely important that you have a lots of followers on Twitter. But the question is always, ‘How to get a lot of Twitter followers?’.

Here are few unrealistic ways (at least to most people) on how to get more Twitter followers.

Become a celebrity superstar

For instance like Justin Bieber where he already has a well established loyal fans. Even if he happen to lose all his followers, he can just easily gain them back because the fan base is already there.

This is not possible for ordinary people like us, so just read on.

Create lots of great products

The person I particularly mean here is Brian Clark of Copyblogger Media. Out of 4 of his products, I owned 2 of them which are Premise and Studiopress. Scribe wasn’t my thing while Synthesis is too expensive to host a blog with low revenue.

My point here is, if you can create loads of great product like Brian, then you can become popular as well. But again if you can’t, continue to read on.

Follow other Twitter users

While I might sound like an idiot here but one of the way to gain Twitter followers is to first follow a group of Twitter users. Based on my following experience, I realize that there are 25%-30% of Twitter users will follow you back if you follow them first.

So, if you are not those popular guy, this is one of the way for you to gain followers.

The guide to gain followers by following

  1. First, you need to know the rules. Twitter doesn’t allow you to do too much of following in a day. Although 2000 is the limit, but we should see it as a long term limit.
  2. Identify few big players of your niche. For instance like blogging niche, my targets are Brian Clark, John Chow, Darren Rowse and Pat Flynn because these people has lots of lots of followers.
  3. What I do with them? Start following their followers. The reason why I am following their followers because I knew that their followers are interested with blogging tips which is relevant to my niche. This also means that I will have a higher Click-Through-Rate and higher rate of them following me back.
  4. After 3-4 days, start cleaning up your Twitter statistic. You don’t want your profile to show that you followed lots of users but has very few followers. So, start unfollowing those that do not follow you back.
  5. Once you are done with it, start following another batch of users. I prefer to start off by following 200-300 users per day. Try not to over-do it as it might cause red alert to Twitter.

I had tried doing this for 3 times with 3 different accounts and so far, I was able to reach 1000 Twitter followers within a month without any really aggressive following.

Lastly, I’d like to suggest you to keep a list of users which you had already unfollowed to prevent yourself from following them again because if those users happened to remember you, they might report you as spam.

Now, your problems

After reading this guide, I’m sure you have the intention to do it but faced problems such as the following:

  • How to get the list of those big players’ followers?
  • How can I tell whether those users which I am following is not following me back.
  • How can I tell whether those users I already unfollowed so that I won’t follow them back.
  • Can I automate this guide or a more convenient way to do it?

The answer is Yes and we will talk about this in the next post.

Thanks for sharing your own set of strategies 🙂 Twitter is such a promising platform when it comes to online marketing and our initial goal must be directed towards gaining more followers so we could effectively send our promotional messages across.

I think it is a cardinal rule in getting your presence known in the internet is to get in touch with your followers and other people. It’s the same as expanding your borders too.

    Hi Alan,

I just want to say that the method you share in this post worked for me too, I started to follow people that had similar interests with me, I aimed for people with a low follower count because this way they would notice immediately when someone new followed them and their more willing to follow back.
I use Tweet Stork to find influencers that have followers interested in similar topics. It’s a paid tool but I only use it to research and then do the following manually.

Have a great weekend mate, all the best.

I just checked out TweetStork and I think it looks as great as TweetAdder. The primary difference is one is monthly subscription while the other is a one time payment. I will try to create a Twitter account and do some testing on this Twitter service that you are using when I am doing a series on social media to see how it is compared to the one I am using 😉
